Maths Challenges
DirectionDescribe turns using the language ’forwards’, ‘backwards’, ‘full turn’, ‘half turn’, ‘quarter turn’, ‘three-quarter turn’, ‘clockwise’ and ‘anticlockwise’. Remember to take into consideration which direction the object/person is facing to begin with. You could explore giving each other instructions to move around your room, or draw a map like the one below: Perhaps you could draw a grid like this one: How many different routes can you find to get from start to finish? Use the language ’forwards’, ‘backwards’, ‘full turn’, ‘half turn’, ‘quarter turn’, ‘three-quarter turn’, ‘clockwise’ and ‘anticlockwise’.
TimePractice telling the time – o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to each hour. If you are confident with this, try telling the time to each 5 minutes. You may like to use one of these links to download and make your own clock:
Click here for a clock that you can use to practice making different times. When making times on your clock, remember to start by making the o’clock time and then move the minute hand forward to make the ‘quarter past’ and ‘half past’ times, and back to make the ‘quarter to’ times.
Here are some worksheets just in case you would like to download, print and practice telling and making the time. However, the most important thing is to practice telling the time on analogue clocks at home.
CapacityYou will need to find a collection of bottles of different sized and shapes, like those in the picture below: Which container do you think holds the most/least liquid? Use estimation first of all. How could you find out? Explore! Can you find a way of counting how many ‘small-container-fulls’ each will hold? Can you find a better way?
MoneyUse the shop prices below: Choose two things to buy. How much will it cost? How much change would you get if you paid with £1? Now try buying three or more objects, how much do they cost in total?
