Our Curriculum
Intent:
At Devonshire Infant School we have designed a broad, relevant, engaging curriculum which
provides our children with the knowledge, skills and learning behaviours required for them to
become successful lifelong learners. This includes not only the Early Years Foundation Stage
curriculum and the National Curriculum, but also enrichment activities that we provide and the
‘hidden curriculum’, where children learn from the way they are treated and expected to behave.
The curriculum that we provide ensures that all children have the opportunity to find out what
they enjoy and are good at. We teach our children the importance of: working with others, being
independent, creative, curious learners who are resilient and able to persevere. Children develop
the ability to apply prior knowledge, skills and understanding to new learning, in order that they are
successful in their next stage of learning.
Implementation:
At Devonshire our curriculum has been designed using the EYFS and National Curriculum and is
delivered by experienced, highly effective staff. Learning is presented clearly and systematically,
building on children’s prior knowledge and understanding. Priority is given to embedding the basic
skills in English and maths, whilst ensuring that all children develop skills, knowledge and
understanding of the full range of foundation subjects. We adopt a cross curricular approach
wherever possible and deliver the curriculum either as a series of lessons over several weeks or as
focused days/weeks, ensuring a systematic progression of knowledge and skills.
Embedded within our curriculum, are our Devonshire Superheroes, which promote essential
characteristics of learning: curiosity, creativity, collaboration and cooperation, independence,
perseverance and making connections. Our children are encouraged to develop these learning
behaviours, in order to lay the foundations for lifelong learning.
Enrichment activities, including visits and visitors are a key feature of the curriculum and the
school heavily subsidises these, to enrich the curriculum for all children. We use the local
environment and community wherever possible, to make the curriculum relevant and meaningful for
all children.
Cultural capital is the essential knowledge that children need to prepare them for their future
success and to become educated citizens. It is about giving children the best possible start to
their early education. Devonshire plays a key role in developing this, through immersing our
children in dance and music, introducing them to high quality literature and art and providing a
range of visitors and visits that they may not otherwise experience. Embedding cultural capital into
our curriculum is a way of narrowing the gap between children from differing socio-economic
backgrounds. We ensure that children from all backgrounds have the same opportunities in order
that they can fulfil their potential.
Impact:
After 3 years at Devonshire, our children will have a secure grasp of the knowledge, skills and
understanding within our curriculum. They will have developed a love of learning and good learning
behaviours, which will prepare them for their next stage of education and beyond. Most
importantly, our children will understand how to be socially, morally, spiritually and culturally
responsible and aware. They will have developed into well-rounded individuals, who will: be
independent, polite, honest, respectful, self-disciplined, have high self-esteem & high expectations
of themselves and appreciate the diverse community within which they live.
